Dancing By the Light of Texas Nose

Yesterday wasn’t my favorite day in the world for a variety of reasons that I don’t want to discuss.

I made meatloaf for dinner, because my husband really likes meatloaf and I really like my husband.  It was undercooked, and because of my lame day, this caused me to tear up.  Which, really, let’s be honest, is so cliche and bizarre that it’s just funny.

I cried that my meatloaf was not properly cooked.

Yikes.

But then we decided to carve our pumpkin for Halloween.  Sam was vibrating with anticipation.  My kids love Halloween.  I mean, all kids love Halloween, but my children are obsessed. We devote a LOT of time to discussing anything associated with Halloween.  For instance, at lunch today, my children pretended to be Halloween decorations and made spooky sounds at one another.  For like 30 minutes they did this.  And they thought it was really fun and normal and stuff.

Pumpkin carving time is second only to the actual trick or treating.  And, as stated before, it caused Sam to vibrate and Henry to run around the house at warp speed pushing his high chair and banging into things and shouting OOOOOOOOOH I A POOKY HA WEEN DECOWATION!

Sam pretty much watched Craig like a hawk and kept him in line, and if he did something unexpected, Sam would challenge his action and demand a prompt explanation.

This is the first year that Sam was not revolted and terrified by the pumpkin guts.

Henry is not quite ready for pumpkin guts.

There was a lot of flinging of pumpkin seeds.

And then I drew the face on, but because of my undercooked meatloaf, I was considered a second class family member and there is no documentation of my contribution.

We like to carve with pencils.

I call him Texas Nose.

And all of this was well and good.  But, by far, the best part was after we lit him up, Michael Jackson’s Thriller came on the radio and we all danced really hard by the light of Texas Nose.

So, though yesterDAY really sort of blew, yesterNIGHT was one of my favorite family times ever.

You know what….when I used to undercook my meatloaf, I would slice it, put it on a platter, and “nuke” it. It worked just fine, and saved my butt many a time. I now let it cook for no less than an hour and a half at 375. As for the pumpkin…GREAT FACE! I love that the eyes and nose look a little like Craig making a scarey face:))

“Henry is not quite ready for pumpkin guts” made me laugh so much. What a photo.
